LG Front Load Washing Machine # WM0642HW "Constant Disgusting ODOR!!!!"

We have had our LG WM0642HW front load washing machine for 2 years now. Shortly after we began to notice a terrible odor.

We read the manual - dry out door and gasket, use Afresh tablets, use vinegar, clean out trap at bottom of washer and the smell is getting worse.

Our laundry room is on main floor, as you enter from garage, so this is not good as this odor is the first thing you smell as you enter our home. We are very disappointed in this product although it came highly recommended.

Anyone from LG listening?

Dead fish smell in front loaders the solution
by: Arnie

The smell of dead fish in your clothes is not the washer but the detergent believe it or not. The washer has nothing to do with it. Tide "he" is the worst.
Try Arm and hammer with oxi-clean for HE washers. There goes the smell. The people that designed these soaps should be sentenced to having their own family use it and walk around with the dead fish smell in their clothes.

lg front loader
by: Anonymous

I just started to hear about that smell in our towels first. I tried running just bleach through the washing cycle. I then purchased Tide cleaning just for front loaders. After I used the tide cleaner the black 1/4 inch drain line is now completely clogged. The clothes have this nasty order. What I have found out was that their should of been a drain hole where the water lies between the seal at the bottom of the opening where you place the clothes into the wash machine. What you must do is after each wash, be careful when you spread the rubber seal & make sure that you wipe it clean from stagnant water @ the bottom & all the way around the black rubber seal. Their will be some milky film, so far so good but I can not unplug the drain line & it has that nasty smell in tie line.

i think it's the lack of water not reaching all of the drum

pop the top off, and look for a black plastic philips head screw, it was the only 4-way screw visible and it will be on a round plastic thing. Turn it clockwise up to 2 full turns, i did 2 and 1/4 on mine. It now fills up to 1/3 up the door for a large load. The screw head is very cheap plastic and strips out easy, so had to finish turning it with a very wide flat screwdriver. It now washes with water. The put a little glue on it at the factory dont worry about the glue busting around it when you turn it. i just marked the original setting of it with a paint pen, just in case it didn't work. Got the idea from a post here about a different lg model and thought hey maybe my model has the same screw. It now works like I want it to. It's actually pretty awesome with water in it. I tried leaving my tip on home depot, but i guess they won't approve it. not surprised..good luck. Try it, i figured it couldn't have made it worse, because i was ready to attempt returning it, but all the new front loaders use too little water and i wanted the front load wash action with a decent amount of water, now i'm happy.

gross smell?
by: Anonymous

I was told by my repair man that the bad smell you may be getting is because you are adding too much detergent. This is a highly efficient machine that requires very little detergent. Make sure you use the HE detergent and use less of it. Run your washer without any clothes and just put bleach in to clean it every once in a while. You may try the extra rinse option as well when you're washing to make sure you get all of the detergent residue cleaned out.

Not just LG product, GE has same problem
by: Anonymous

I have had my washer for just over a year. With the same problem. Not in the house that it is such a problem but the clothing itself.

Wash things twice to try and get rid of smell. Don't shut door, use Afresh, vinegar, the clean cycle and I don't leave clothes sit at tall once cycle is done.

Cant believe GE and others are making a product with such an apparent problem. Funny thing is, if I smell that sour clothes smell on someone else and ask them if they have front loaders, they do.

What a disappointment. I had a Frigidaire front loader. It worked really well and no odor!!!!
