LG Washer WM0642HW - Finally After two years i found out how to raise the water level.

by Sean Stan
(Los Angeles,CA.U.S.A.)

I've been looking everywhere from LG and every possible web site to see how can i get the water level up on my LG WM0642HW.

Over the last two years the clothes just haven't been getting clean unless the cylinder is only loaded half full. With a full load, the clothing gets completely saturated near the end of the wash segment. It was just horrible.LG and everywhere i looked said there was no way to raise the water level that there nothing they could do. That was how the machine was made.

Finally on a web site someone who has the same model said there was an adjustment screw on the top water level switch under the lid and to turn it a little clockwise and the machine would stop filling at a higher set point, instead of just at the edge of the gray drum baffels inside the cylinder.

Since i had been through so many run arounds with LG and just partial info from others last night i decided to have a look. I raised the lid and i did see a set screw. I got a phillips screwdriver and turned the set screw and started the machine.Good Lord, the machine filled up to just under the gray door seal. I was shocked!

Two years i've been trying to find a way to do this and LG just lied and lied through their teeth. Two years of still smelling my scent in clothing after a cycle was completed. Two years of my towels stinking when i put them to my face to dry off in the shower. Also, lots of dark clothing i had to throw away.

I then washed a load of laundry and i saw water flowing over my clothing early into the cycle not at the end.At the end of the cycle i smelled my shirts the arm pit area, No Smell. All this time, and all i needed was a few gallons more water for my machine to work with.

LG should be ashamed as many times as i've called for help and asked for answers to this situation and the reps and techs just gave me the run around and never a straight answer.

This procedure took less than 20 minutes for me to do.But two years to find the solution. Good Luck to other owners.I'm spreading the info so hopefully you won't have to go through the long headache i went through with clothing plopping around for a long time in cups of concentrated dirty water and poor rinsing.

After almost two years of run around with LG customer service and techs about the too low water level in my LG WM0642HW, someone posted on the internet that there was a way to raise the preset water level so the machine would fill to a higher set point.

LG stated every time i called and wrote them that absolutely nothing could be done about the water level. That's how it was made. The LG phone tech even told me the water level sensor was behind the front panel near the door when i asked him where it was located.I looked for it and never found it.

The water level sensor was actually under the top lid, on the top back on the right side of the inner cabinet. It had a adjustment screw for a phillips screw driver.I turned it clockwise alittle, and started the washer. The machine cylinder filled to the edge of the lower rubber door seal.Clothing was "fully" saturated at the start of the cycle and not near the end of the wash segment.

Almost two years i've been looking for this answer and i'm especially angry at LG Customer service, Live Chat, and LG phone techs because they repeatedly told me "NOTHING"could be done about the water level because it was solely determined by the weight of the load. I can't tell you how many clothes i've thrown out because of smell and build up that just wouldn't come out when the water level was at the preset from the factory. Shirts that you could still smell your arm pit in them after the cycle was over.

With that little adjustment i made with the water level sensor, every load i've done so far has come out clean and odor free.I feel so sorry for others because i've read hundreds of peoples gripes on forums etc. Trying to do adjustments with additives, and poor rinsing and poor laundry results. They had ok results if the washer was loaded half full. But that doesn't make sense. Why would you buy a washer for large capacity loads and only able to load it half full to get the loads clean.

All the problems people are having and 90% of it was avoidable. The people were right to complain. This dry washing really doesn't get you laundry clean.New owners may not notice at first, but believe me, let some time go by and one day they'll grab their towel while drying off in the shower and realize my towels stink, and would be embarrassed to think if they had guests over and the host had given them towels that smelled like that!

LG washer WM0642HW owners who are unhappy with the water level, disassemble the 4 screws on the dispenser tray. Push dispenser tabs on sides of tray to drop. Lower dispenser. Left side first, press in top lid clip while holding lid through dispenser opening. Do left side first, then right. Raise lid. You'll see the pressure switch.Turn screw a little clockwise. You'll know if you've turned it the wrong way because it will fill with only a gallon .

Make sure the cylinder is empty. No clothing inside, so you can see what you're doing. Start washer. Make sure dispenser assembly doesn't tip over and spill water in cabinet area.Check the fill level. Does it stop just below the lower door seal. That would be perfect! I wouldn't go a drop higher than that period! If so ,reassemble everything and this will be the end of this dry washing.

Good advice
by: Stegs

Worked well. I was truly ready to buy a new top load washer. My fill tray had 4 screws but other than that the directions were right on the money. The adjustment you are making is a diaphram that senses air pressure. As the water level gets higher in the drum the water gravitates down causing the air in the line to pressureize the diaphram and shut the water off. By turning the screw in the increase the amount of air it takes to stop the water. Mine took 1.5 turns in and the water level is still below the door gasket and washing much better.

by: Anonymous

I read how to increase the water level, but where is the screw? Under the door, under the dispenser tray, behind the machine or under the top lid?

Please help.

OMG I wish I knew this years ago!
by: Anonymous

I was just about ready to go back to a regular top load washer when I found this article.

I have an LG WM1812CW. Removed the dispenser tray, 2 screws then gently popped off the control panel. One that was done I used a screw driver to pry open the top. Once inside, the control was in the right rear. Had to expirement a few times with how far to turn (I ended up with a full turn).

Found out if you start the machine let it fill and check the level, you can pause it, adjust some more and it will start filling again.

Once done, snapped the top back on, then the control panel, and reinserted the screws and soap tray.

Works like a charm!!!! Thanks to everyone who experimented with their model and gave me hope for mine!

Opening lid of washer to adjust water level screw.
by: Sean

My washer has two clips just under the lid in the front (about 2 1/2" from each side). First you must remove the 4 screws from the dispenser cover, releasing the dispenser (don't worry, it will not fall down far as it is attached to several hoses). Then, using a clean metal putty knife, push in firmly from the front towards the back of the washer, one clip at a time, while lifting that side of the lid. It is a spring metal clip & will move about 1/4" before releasing.

Then you can access the adjustment screw at the rear of the compartment at the top. Beat to use a #3 phillips head screwdriver to firmly turn the screw clockwise. I have not had a chance to check the water level yet as my drain pump is shot and I'm waiting for the part...

amana water level
by: Anonymous

I just found this site after tearing my Amana apart for the same problem. I followed the wiring until I came to a diaphram with the wires that come from the main control computer. It was on the top right towards the front . It is simple to get to just remove the rear two screws and pull rearward on the top . The pressure senser is very sensative , as the water rises up the tube that enters lower on the tub the air pressure pushes on the pressure senser diaphram. To adjust mine I turned on the washer and watched it fill then turned the #3 phillips screw one half turn at a time until the water was at the level I wanted it. The over educated engineers didn't take into account the fact that air density is completely different at sea level than it is at 3400 feet where we live.Using air pressure ( air density ) for determining water level is stupid.

This really does work and is so easy to do
by: Anonymous

AWESOME! Thank you so much! This worked like a dream! The hardest part was getting my LG F1256QD out from under the worktop. Two screws at the back to get the lid off - then you can't miss the black 'screw' surrounded by red 'glue'. I started off with a half turn clock wise - then a bit more, trying the water level each time. I settled on a turn and a half - now the water comes up about an inch up the glass, the clothes get soaked and I see some soap suds. After a year of having to start every wash on delicates to get the water as high as possible, then forgetting to change it to a proper program once it was full so starting again and then having to put it on an extra rinse at the end and still the clothes coming out smelling strongly of washing powder and not clean at last I am looking forward to a less complicated life! I suspect the reason the water level is set so low might be something to do with the 10 year guarantee on the motor which I guess will have to work harder if the machine has more water in it... who knows...

Much Better
by: Anonymous

I just increased the water level in my machine, it was so simple, the pressure switch was right on the top (under the top panel) at the back of the washer. I used a very large philips screw driver and it didn't make the plastic switch at all. I turned it a total of 1/2 turn after trying a couple of smaller turns. Now the water level is much better. It's almost to the top rim but still can be paused and opened. Since delicate uses much more water, pausing it during the wash/rinse cycle won't be possible as the water would come out but that's fine. This washer is at my summer home, at my main home I purchased the new wm3875 to replace a 5 year old wm2277 and I noticed right away it used much more water in the tub. That is a great washer with everything you can think of on it.

This site was a great find.

The screws to remove the top were located on the top backside, nothing was attached to the lid it lifted right up, hope that helps.

you can't break it by taking the top off, what good is it to run 50 cycles to try to rinse your clothes, just pop off the top and turn the screw.

Is there any wire connected with the top lid? My husband is concerned that he might break the machine and doesn't want to pop the lid. Right now I have to use the speedwash+rinse/spin+water plus+extra rinse several times after regular wash cycle.

that's the screw , it's really cheap and it strips when you turn it, don't freak out, just turn it clockwise some then plug washer in and start a cycle and you will see more water. mine was in the center too, it was the only screw i could see anywhere and it had red around it.

WM2240CW
by: RB

Worked for my LG WM2240CW 2 and 1/4 clockwise turns on the cheap black plastic screw that was in the middle toward the back,(after popping the top off by taking 2 screws in back out, no dispenser removal required) took husband ten minutes to do, and NOW it's a dream washer, goes a little up on the lid on cotton cycle with the waterplus button pressed! I wasn't sure i could do it on my model but we gave it a try because i was thinking about returning it to home depot.

Question for the LG model WM2301HW user who post on Mar 4: Do you take off the dispenser tray first? How did you take off the top? I saw 2 screws on the dispenser tray. Do you have to take off the screw at the back to raise the top? I really like to try but don't know where to start first. Thanks.

Oh Thank Heaven!
by: Anonymous

We have an LG model WM2301HW and have experienced the same troubles as listed above and have struggled for the last year. I was about to buy a different machine and then I found this post.

I took the top off the machine and adjusted the water flow. It was a plastic Phillips screw with red lock tight on it. I carefully turned it clockwise. Now the machine fills up so I can tell there is even water in the tub. What a huge difference!

The Water Level Sensor Switch
by: Roto-Spray

Dave that actuator you mentioned was the water level switch. The plastic round device with a air hose and wires comming out of it under the top of the washer cover. You turn it clockwise slowly until it bottoms out. When it as far as it goes the black plasitc turn area your screwdriver is in will start to strip. You are not to twist hard.Maybe a full turn and then it bottoms out, stops. There is some red lock tite that will break as you start the first ever turn. That's just done at the factory to keep it in place the water level setting. It's ok to break the red glue and turn clockwise so the water level is higher.
