Sucky GE Profile Washer

by Karen Grady
(Las Vegas)

I bought the GE Profile washer and dryer(though I should have known better) a couple of years ago after an extensive remodel of our home.

I bought it because it was one of only two sets on the market at the time that had a glass door and was a top-loader, which I love. The dryer works just dandy, and also has a glass door. I hated the other brand's dryer pull-it-out-from-a-trap-door-on-top lint screen, so that the lint flies all over your laundry room.

The GE Profile washer has two major flaws that drive me nuts. There is no water level adjustment. If the washer decides that your 50 lb. load of laundry can be washed with one gallon of water, then that is what it does. My laundry is never fully clean or fully rinsed. The only 'cycle' that actually puts plenty of water in is the throw rug cycle, which is usually too much water for a normal load.

The other flaw is the knotting of garments. It doesn't matter if you choose hand-wash, gentle, normal or vigorous. It doesn't matter if you use lots of water, or hardly any. Any article that has sleeves or legs will get tied in knots with every other article in the load. Many articles get damaged due to this action. AND they don't get clean.

You would think that after 80 years of making washing machines, that GE would get a clue. I realize the need for saving water, but dirty clothes is not the answer, and taking the adjustment option away from the consumer, is like telling us we are all wasteful and stupid, then making us resort to using too much water or living with dirty clothes.

A side effect of using the throw rug cycle with too much water is that a normal load will become unbalanced easily, and the washer will walk it's way across your floor, damaging that as well.

Big Regret on PROFILE washer.
by: Diane Miller

I agree with many comments here about a disappointing purchase of this PROFILE wash machine. I ABSOLUTELY HATE THIS MACHINE. I have no choice in how the load is run. I have no say in the water level. I can NOT run the spin cycle again if I feel the clothes seem a little too wet yet. Sometimes I may want to let the clothes soak for a bit in the rinse cycle with the fabric softner, but oh, that's right, I have no say in that. Today I started to wash a load of towels and then found I had to leave the house, so I stopped the machine and about 15 minutes later the water went out of the machine, so when I re-started the load later as 'towels', it must have thought it was a HUGE load, since the towels were wet and heavy, so it filled the machine almost to the top with water. This stupid machine is making all the choices for me and I am so sorry that I bought this piece of crap. $1000, I wasted on this thing. There isn't even a manual with the machine to explain what the cycle is doing along the way. Is the machine suppose to have only 2 inches of water in it??? Nothing here to tell me how the machine is suppose to work. Did I say I HATE THIS THING??? Because I do.

What I just sent to GE Customer Service
by: Anonymous

I just wanted to say I have NEVER in my life been more disappointed with a GE appliance and I will NEVER purchase anything manufactured by your company again. I have had thousands of dollars of clothing ruined by this machine. I was under the mistaken impression that my family was just too hard on clothing (sports and food and sweat) and that was why the clothing would NEVER get clean. It did not matter what detergent, temperature setting, what pre-treater I used; the clothing would just not get clean. When my toddler would wet her bed and I would wash the sheets, I could STILL smell the urine when the sheets came out of the wash. I chalked it up to an overly sensitive nose and started using heavily perfumed detergent or softner to cover the odor though I knew the sheets were not really clean. I knew that the dryer would sanitize and I also started setting the water temp for the house much higher than the recommended 125 to ensure sanitation. It was not until I washed my son's football pants at my mother-in-law's house in her $400 10 year old machine with an arm that I truly realized that it was my machine and not my family with the issues. I am sick to my stomach that we spent over $700 for a machine touted to do so much and it does nothing more than swish my clothes around in the drum. If we were white collar workers who did no physical activity and our children were not physically active at all and all of our clothes needed to be washed on delicate, this would be the machine for us. However, we are a typical American family who need a machine that can stand up to us. So far, we have not found it in this product.

I don't know about a screw adjustment to add more water each cycle, but perhaps someone can address that. I have added additional water by filling a bucket as many times as it takes and just dumping it into the tub, with no adverse effects. However, this does not help the rinse cycle(s), unless you are standing right there at the ready.

GE Profile WPRE8150K2WT inadequate water
by: CKS in TN

Specifically GE Profile Washer WPRE8150K2WT doesn't fill with adequate water. We fill buckets from the bathroom and have to fill it up so that the clothes are actually in the water! Customer support= 'that is by design'. I know better than that. If the garment isn't in the water then it isn't being 'washed'. I won't buy again from GE.

can we (internally) adjust water level of GE washer
by: Anonymous

I am sad that I have to agree with you. My clothes get more dingy with every wash and that although I use Tide HE and other boosters, as well as using the extra rinse cycle to get out any left over detergent. I have not seen the "rug-cycle". A friend of mine told me about a "screw" on the inside of the washer which can be turned to change the water level (she has a whirlpool) and she adds another 4 gallons of water through her laundry detergent dispenser for every cycle (you really have to watch the cycles, but her laundry is sooo much cleaner). She says that you can't overfill the machine, if you add too much water it just starts draining the excess. Has anyone had any experience with the GE washers. Can we add water without worrying about damaging the mashine? Do we have that special water adjustment screw? If we do please let me know.

GE Profile water level
by: Dianne

I too am disappointed that I cannot change water level. I never knew about using the rug setting. I will try that on mattress pads.
