All You Ever Wanted to Know About Your Washing Machine Agitator

Want to learn about a washing machine agitator? Here is a guide that will explain how this device works, and how to deal with some problems that can go wrong with it.

A washing machine agitator is an integral component of a top loading clothes washer. You will find this device sticking out from beneath the wash tub.

The main function of this device is to move the clothes around in the wash tub while they are being washed. Newer models of top loading washing machines have state of the art agitators are very effective in creating an efficient washing movement while the washing process is going on.

How Does The Agitator Work?

The agitator is impelled by a drive mechanism which also helps water inflow as well as outflow. The movement of the drive mechanism causes the agitator to move inside the wash tub and this movement then moves the clothes around during the washing cycle. During the spinning cycle, the same drive mechanism also impels the spin cycle.

Different Types of Washing Machine Agitators

There are different kinds of agitators but the two most commonly used seen in most machines are the straight-vane agitators and the dual action agitators.

  • Straight Vane Agitators: In the case of straight vane agitators, one part of the agitator is attached to the bottom of the machine and the agitator itself moves with the help of side fins.
  • Dual Action Agitators: With dual action agitators, the two portions of the agitator is attached under the fins of the washer and the device moves in a circular manner.
Most manufacturers offer both, straight-vane as well as dual action agitators.

Potential Problems that can Arise

There are certain problems that often seem to crop up when things go wrong with this device. Knowing about these common problems can help you identify where the trouble lays and will help you keep your washing machine in good working order.

Some of the oft-noticed issues with these parts include electrical circuit damage, washing machine overloading, which the agitator cannot handle.

If you find that your agitator does not move properly, check the lid switch, drive belt, motor coupler and the water level switch. Check for soot beneath the washer and check the pump coupling.

Replacing a Damaged Washing Machine Agitator

When any washing machine part gets damaged, you should remove it and put in a new one as soon as possible. This is important because any part that is defective can tear and destroy your clothes while they are being washed in your washer.

Another problematic aspect of a defective part is that it can cause the washing machine itself to run sluggishly and malfunction.

Removing the agitator from the washing machine is not very complicated. Following these simple steps will help you do the job properly. First, you have to take off the agitator cap by unscrewing it.

Then, tug at the agitator till it comes out. Sometimes it can be hard to get the agitator out; in such a case fill the washing machine tub half full with hot water, or use a small piece of wood to tap the agitator out.

Make sure your replacement agitator is of the same model and the old one and fit the new one in carefully.

Take care of your washing machine and its agitator, and your laundry will take care of itself – well, almost! At least you will not face problems with clothes coming out of the clothes washer damaged and torn because of the washing machine agitator not working properly.
