What You Need to Know About Your Washing Machine Hose

Read on to learn about your washing machine hose? what kinds are available and why you need to see that it is well maintained.

It makes sense for you to know a little bit about this part of your washer including how it works, how to maintain it and how to replace it as well as what the different kinds available and which ones work best. Since a washer hose is not easily visible, it is often neglected. But a defective one can cause a lot of trouble.

Types of Hoses

Essentially, there are two main types of hoses, the old fashioned reinforced rubber type, and the steel hose, which is a rubber type reinforced with stainless steel.

The latter type is strengthened with steel to increase the durability. The reinforced types, also known as a stainless steel braided hoses or steel washing machine hoses are considered to be burst proof.

The stainless steel wire mesh that surrounds the hose reduces the incidence of cracking, kinking and swelling that occurs in other types of hoses.

Maintaining your Washing Machine

There are some things you can do to maintain it in good working order.

Keep some space between the rear of your washing machine and the water link. Avoid leaving your clothes washer on when you are not at home to notice if anything goes wrong. Keep the hoses shut off when the machine is not in operation.

Ensure that it is not kinked anywhere. Hoses that come with angled connectors make a lot of sense when you are constrained for space. It is also a good idea to have water valves that shut off automatically when the washing machine discharge hose springs a leak.

Regular rubber hoses need to be inspected at least twice a year. Even the stainless steel water hoses should be replaced once in three years or so.

There are various reasons for problems that could arise with the hose. An old hose will not function at peak efficiency, which can affect the performance of your washer.

Also, a hose that is in a position where it is rubbing against a wall will eventually get damaged. Sometimes, chemicals in the water can cause damage to the hose. Poor installation can also lead to problems.

Taking these simple steps to see that your washing machine is in good condition is well worth the effort.
